Breakwater, San Sebastian—My Tribute to Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Acrylic on paper—Mayank Chhaya)
Admittedly, I have been in an escapist mood lately, avoiding the current affairs unless there is some fun to be had. What better place to escape to than a somewhat fantasy version of San Sebastian in Spain? I have not been there and there is next to chance that I will ever be there given one’s relentless penury. The cheapest way for me is to paint it.
The master Spanish painter, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida whose 154th birth anniversary it was yesterday, has produced some remarkable paintings from there in the early 20th century. I did this one as a tribute to him. I have written about Sorolla and his striking work. My version here is accentuated with colors that may or may not exist in San Sebastian’s natural setting. But that is the whole point of painting anything for me. Colors are great liberators from the oppressive mundaneness that penury always entails.
