Mont Sainte-Victorie—a tribute to Cézanne—MC
Wheat Field—a Tribute to Van Gogh--MC
One runs the risk of becoming a derivative hack or just a plain mediocre mimic while emulating works by the great masters. Nevertheless, I do it occasionally to test whether I have any merit at all. In keeping with that continuing education I do produce my versions of painters such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Cézanne. I find the exercise sharpens my skills.
Over the weekend I did two—one a version of Van Gogh’s Wheat Field and Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victorie. Quite strangely, my versions sit together rather well although Cézanne (1836-1906) and van Gogh (1853-1890) were very different kinds of painters.
Think of these versions as a fuel that propels my own way of painting. If you have looked at these works more that a couple of seconds they have achieved their purpose.
