Walking in front of Queen Elizabeth II is the least of President Donald Trump’s transgressions. So stop focusing on it. In fact, to the political and cultural constituency he represents—and he has chosen to do that almost exclusively—that is an act of ballsy crassness. Many of them might even love it.
Why talk about breach of protocol here when his entire political existence is in breach of all protocols? Trump reminds me of some my now long dead unabashedly male chauvinist uncles who too insisted on walking a couple of steps ahead of their wives and other women as the latter followed in utter deference. In their minds all those uncles were no less than monarchs and their wives and womenfolk the hoi polloi.
Of course, we are talking about the queen of England here who has spent her entire life being deferred to and curtsied. At 92, she has had more than her fair share of being revered every step of the way.
While it is bad form for any man to deliberately walk ahead of any woman anywhere on the planet, Trump doing it to the queen is not especially surprising. Is it inelegant? Sure. Is it unrefined? You bet. Is it undignified? Absolutely. However, of all the things Trump should and must be denounced for, walking a step or two ahead in willful or ignorant defiance of the royal protocol is the most ridiculous. It seems royal watchers were “aghast” at the transgression. Aghast? Really? That bad, huh?
I would have been “aghast” had he not done what he did. The man leads a life that has totally excluded reality. The queen, who has met 12 US presidents since Harry Truman, except Lyndon B Johnson, couldn’t care less other than being perhaps mildly amused.
Presumably, all those 12 presidents knew how to conduct themselves when with her. So let us just say that she needed a break from the boring routine of obsequiousness and abject deference and she found it in Trump. She has been the queen of England since Trump was barely six years old. She knows how to deal with boors.
