Since yesterday, I have been obsessing over Hindi cinema star Simi Garewal’s particular look in the 1968 movie ‘Saathi’. She was 23 then.
In a song from the film ‘Yeh kaun aaya roshan ho gayi’ Simi, is dressed in a gorgeous ivory-white and ocher silk sari with a matching blouse. I suspect she was wearing the famous Kanjeevaram silk.
Simi looked sensational. These days my response to a woman looking sensational is to paint her. Since painting likenesses is not my strong suit I have focused on Simi’s sartorial and body language aspects. In any case, given my limitations, I did not set out to paint the woman in my work like her but merely someone somewhat reminiscent of her.
I am reasonably happy with the result which should suffice as my Sunday morning offering.
